Sheep

Arapawa Island Sheep

These sheep were liberated on Arapawa Island at the top of the South Island.  The most probable origins are escapees of a flock of mainly Merino sheep known to have been introduced in 1867, or possibly earlier by whalers.  Their coats are brown in colour, with some white. With no interbreeding, they have remained a pure bred line of sheep.
